Dialect and Language Contact

I examine dialect contact among different varieties of Spanish throughout the Spanish-speaking world. I have published on dialect contact between Mexican and Central American varieties of Spanish in Los Angeles, California. I am currently the recipient of a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award to Uruguay, where I am investigating 1) immigrant identity formation through the use of language among speakers of different dialects of Spanish in Uruguay; and 2) code-switching between Spanish and Portuguese and other language contact phenomena along the Uruguayan-Brazilian border.
