The purpose of the Literate Adolescents (LA) Intervention Project is to establish, replicate, and disseminate a model demonstration program that improves the literacy of students with disabilities in high-need, urban high schools. The Project will implement intensive, culturally responsive, evidence-based adolescent literacy interventions, provide professional development activities to all educators involved in the model, and conduct ongoing evaluation. Expected outcomes are the following. 1. Improved literacy for high school students with disabilities. 2. Highly trained educators to implement literacy interventions across a variety of content areas. 3. A replicable and efficacious model of intensive literacy intervention in urban high schools. The LA Intervention Project is designed to develop a model of intensive adolescent literacy intervention suitable for high-need urban high schools. Year 1 of the model provides intensive small-group intervention with support in content area classes. Year 2 focuses on incorporating interventions in classrooms and small group settings. The model incorporates professional development including workshops, teacher-led activities, and coaching. Products consist of websites, a curriculum handbook, professional development training manual, and guidelines for project implementation. These products will facilitate replication of the model. Formative and summative evaluation activities will assess the fidelity of implementation, stakeholder satisfaction, and student performance outcomes. Years Three and Four of the project will be replication of the model at two additional high schools in the Los Angeles area.
